One thing you know about Kansas...there's always road construction, right? Speeding doesn't mix well with that.
My friends at KDOT have partnered with law enforcement agencies across the entire state of Kansas to launch a tough new speed enforcement blitz, called "Obey the Sign or Pay the Fine."
This means officers are intensifying enforcement of posted speed limits on Kansas roads, highways and interstates, targeting and ticketing speeding drivers.
The posted speed limit is the law. No warnings and no excuses.
Speeding translates to death on our roadways. It greatly reduces a driver’s ability to steer safely around another vehicle, hazardous object, or unexpected curve. Speeding put everyone on the road at tremendous risk.
In 2015, 36 percent of fatal crashes in Kansas were speed-related.
Nationwide, speeding was a contributing factor in 27 percent of all fatal crashes, leading to more than 9,500 deaths, according to the latest data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
And it doesn’t matter where you drive:
- Data show 17 percent of all speeding-related traffic fatalities occur on local roads.
- About 15 percent of all speeding-related fatalities occur on interstate highways.
- And a major proportion of fatal, speeding-related single-vehicle crashes occur on rural roadways.
